** 2010 Trinity Trash Bash ** Lewisville citizens have asked, and now Keep Lewisville Beautiful is bringing back the Trinity Trash Bash on September 18th, 2010! Hoping to raise awareness and appreciation of the Trinity River, Lewisville Lake, their respective shorelines, and 16 local creeks that feed into these waterways, Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) is hosting a Trinity Trash Bash Celebration to clean our waterways! Both the Trinity River and Lewisville Lake play an enormous role in supplying water to many Texans. The Trinity River is 715 miles long—its collection basin covers 17 counties, 17,965 square miles and is the primary water source for over 6 million Texans in the upper basin and 5 million Texans in the gulf coast region. That’s over half of the states population! The Trinity River and its water basin also accounts for nearly 6% of our State’s landmass. Lake Lewisville is part of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and is comprised of over 233 miles of shoreline and 9,000 protected acres of nature. In addition to providing drinking water to Denton and Dallas County communities, Lake Lewisville is also a recreational area with a multitude of activities available, such as fishing, water sports, boating, biking, and miles of scenic hiking trails. It has even been named the official "Urban Bass Fishing Capital of Texas”. With the importance of Lake Lewisville and the Trinity River’s basins in mind, KLB–as part of a regional effort with 19 other organizations and T.R.E.E.S.—will be conducting a huge event to help clean up our beloved shorelines and tributaries. From 8am to 11am on September 18th, hundreds of volunteers will combine their efforts to help clean up waterways across the city. In 2009, our volunteers spent 127.5 hours picking up over 1,180 pounds of trash from Lewisville waterways, and in February 2010 they spent 135 hours cleaning 1,400 pounds of trash out of Lewisville creek beds—they are excited about our fall clean up! KLB will be supplying participants with cleaning supplies, waterway education, free t-shirts, and goody bags as well as door prizes to show our appreciation for all of our volunteers who participate. Being a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization we can’t always afford the cost of this event and/or prizes and goody bag stuffers for our volunteers who work so hard to keep our community clean. This is where we ask for your help. We are in need of donations to our event. Any donations would be appreciated. All donors will be listed on event signage, in addition to being thanked at the Trinity Trash Bash to our volunteer audience of 200-400 people. Businesses will also be listed on this Trinity Trash Bash webpage leading up to the event. This would be a great opportunity to promote your business to a new audience, and to show your community that you care about the health of Lewisville waterways and shorelines. Any donations can be mailed to: To sign your team up for the event, please contact our office at 972-436-5100 or to send an e-mail to info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org .
Want to know more about the Trinity River? KERA did a great documentary on the Trintiy River in Texas and has a website with tons of information about this great Texan resource. To learn more about this mighty river and why it is so important, check out www.trinityrivertexas.org
Other Waterway Clean Up programs: Hoping to raise awareness and appreciation of Lewisville Lake, its shorelines, local streams, creeks, and waterways, Keep Lewisville Beautiful and the City of Lewisville have come up with a new program called "Clean Stream Team" in which residents have the chance to adopt and take care of a waterway. Similar to past "Trinity Trash Bashes" this program focuses on cleaning Lewisville's waterways across the city. However instead of cleaning once a year, we are hoping to have monthly or bi-monthly clean ups focusing on the importance of clean waterways. Perhaps you have an unsightly creek behind your house or in your favorite park that you want to do something about- This is the perfect program for you! Similar to the Adopt-A-Spot program, Clean Stream Teams can be formed by families, organizations, scouts, businesses, or individuals who share our passion in maintaining our environment. If you are interested in adopting a stream and forming a team, or would like more information about this program, please call 972-436-5100 or send an e-mail to info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org. Make a difference today and give us a call! To fill out a Clean Stream Team form and get started today, please visit our online request form page.
